Layering is big this season and boys if you want to stay ahead of the style game, you have got to get piling on those clothes.
Layering is a skill (yes skill) once you learn it you can continue to produce high quality outfits on a consistent basis. Remember t-shirt, sleeveless pullover and cardigan = bad layering: T-shirt, pullover and puffed body warmer = good layering. Unfortunately learning this essential layering skill is a case of trail and error. So get experimenting...
Layering Top-on-top-of-Top Tips
- Start with light thin layers first. A basic white cotton t-shirt is a wardrobe staple and works excellently as a close to the skin vest. Then layer up with heavier fabrics.
- The second layer cannot be too baggy or skin tight. You want to create a thin layer of air between each layer of clothing for insulation. 3 or 4 light layers work better than one bulky think layer. Suggestion – a waistcoat.
- Brighten up winter blues with the addition of not just black, brown, khaki, navy and grey, take it up a gear and add an arresting purple, green or red to your look. Give patterns and materials a go too, don’t be shy?
- Define the layers. A layer is essentially an item that can also been worn on its own and still look just as good. If you get too hot under the collar then you should be able to remove a layer without destroying the overall look. Each layer should simply reinforce the look you are going for.
- Keep different styles separate. Don’t go mixing a Guns n Roses T with a dress shirt. A mish-mash of styles will simply confuse the eye and the ladies.
- Although layering can be used for both casual and formal occasions, it works best with casual styles. However if you do want to experiment with layering in a formal situation its best not to go over 3 layers - a great shirt, a blazer and then mac over the top works well.
- Most importantly, feel comfortable. Don’t’ go overboard. You are not going for the Michelin Man look. Get creative with it!
